While I would never encourage anyone to slander the church (i.e., say false things about it in order to disparage it), if you have had negative experiences, it might be worth letting others know about it. As you probably know, the members of the church have a long history of recruiting young impressionable students from various campuses (ASU West, Paradise Vally Community College, Scottsdale Community College, Grand Canyon University, and Great Hearts Academy, Phoenix Christian, GCC, and more). Since people are prone to seek the internet for information, it would be good to provide a more comprehensive picture of what the church is actually like.

Google Reviews and Westminster Fellowship.
On occasion I google 'Westminster Fellowship, AZ' to see if there have been any interesting bits of news related to the church. . This morning, in doing so, I noticed that a few of the Gangadeanians have recently left google reviews for the church. For a long time, the reviews were really bad. I recall when I first started attending the church, there was one that actually referred to the church as "jonestown in the making". But recently, there are several new very positive reviews each from long time members. Looks like they are (understandably) trying to improve the image of the church.

You seem really hung up on how they "prey" on undergrads and students who are not yet properly trained to think at that high of level, yet your blog is in no way philosophically accessible either. Seems a bit hypocritical. If you were able to simplify your arguments against Gangadean so that students/undergrads could understand them as well, then your point could be made. Just my opinion. Sometimes it is difficult to keep up with your philosophical jargon, along with Gangadean's as well.
ReplyDeleteHi anon,
DeleteI'm not sure 'hypocritical' is the apt term here, but I get your point. I could certainly do more to make this blog more accessible for non-philosophers, but that's actually not a very easy thing to do. Jargon frequently serves as shorthand and to avoid using it would involve even lengthier articles, which turns out to be more work for me. That doesn't mean I don't intend on working on it. I try, but please keep in mind that I have a lot of other work to attend to and I don't receive any sort of compensation for what I do on this blog, so I'm working against some constraints.
Additionally, if you're really struggling to make sense of what I write, why not email me for further elaboration with some direct questions, as others have done over the years? The articles are intended to be a first point of contact, rather than anything comprehensive. Philosophy is really complicated and is usually best done by way of dialogue rather than monologue.
Best,
J
